DESIGN
Drama, dark comedy, 111 min., 2002. An official selection of the Sundance Film Festival and leading fests worldwide, Design explores the mysterious governing power of fate, where everyday circumstances are controlled by a grimly amused, manipulative force.
Eighteen-year-old Sonya struggles to save her father from alcoholism after his wife leaves him for the community center art teacher. Voyeuristic photographer Nicholas is obsessed with women, yet hides from behind the prying lens of his camera. Cursed factory worker Seamus and his fiancée Kate plan their wedding amidst coming to grips with the truth about each other and themselves.
Design was the first feature film to screen as a 35 mm print transferred from an HD assemble of Super 16mm reversal film. This process produced a high-quality print that exhibits the film’s moody Super 16 mm stock along with Super 8 mm, anamorphic and video story segments with enthralling visual presentation. Design was also noted for its bold direction and ominous musical score.
Variety compared Design to the early work of David Lynch and praised the film’s “arresting cinematic style” and “fascinatingly complex screenplay.” Design airs on the Sundance Channel. Check local listings for show times.
